Hat Etiquette: The Dos and Don’ts
It’s that time of year again—you need hats, hats, and more
hats for all your fabulous events like the Derby and Hats in the Garden. And
you’ve gone to Marilyn’s, purchased your hat (; and now comes wearing it. For
most, hat etiquette is a foreign concept. Never fear…Marilyn’s has done the
research, so you are more than prepared for the big day!
1. Be
mindful of your hat size. If your hat blocks the view of those behind you, after
you sit down be courteous and rest it on your lap or to the side for the
duration of the event. You can put it back on when standing or walking around
the venue.
2. Be
sure to practice going to the bathroom with your hat. Now, we know this may
sound silly, but it’s a learning curve. Especially, if you are not a frequent
hat wearer.
3. Be
mindful of your hat’s protrusions. Feathers or extending adornments can be a
hazard to those around you. So just be sure to not poke your fellow peers!
4. Ensure
you coordinate your hat to your dress. This is a requirement for social events
of this caliber.
5. Be
sure you wear a proper, and not flimsy hat. Formal affairs come with this
expectation.
Above all, please do enjoy your time at these events. They
only come once a year, so make the most of it! Wearing hats should be a fun and
joyful experience.
